ETHIOPIA: THE ORIGIN OF COFFEE

1.1 The Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia is widely recognized as the birthplace of Coffea arabica. Legend tells of a goat herder named Kaldi who discovered the energizing effects of the red cherry in the 9th century. Today, Ethiopia remains the guardian of the world's largest genetic diversity of Arabica coffee, offering flavor profiles found nowhere else on earth.

1.2 Cultural & Economic Significance

Coffee is more than a crop in Ethiopia—it is the foundation of a rich cultural ceremony and the backbone of the national economy.

  • Livelihood: Coffee supports approximately 25% of Ethiopia's population.
  • Exports: It is Ethiopia's number one export earner
  • Production: In the 2022/23 harvest year, Ethiopia produced over 496,200 metric tons (approx. 8.27 million 60kg bags).

Ethiopia's diverse micro-climates and heirloom varieties create a stunning range of flavors. We source from the country's most prestigious regions.
